Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA) is one of the two public Universities located in Lisbon, ranking 18th in Southern Europe according to QS World University Rankings 2025. The university comprises several institutes and schools, including NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH).
NOVA FCSH opened its doors in 1978, and, since then, has been promoting excellence in teaching and research in Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, while fostering the creation, dissemination and support of humanistic culture. NOVA FCSH has been a pioneer in many areas of knowledge, but, above all, in the vision it has developed for teaching and research, which winds up today in a permanent commitment: interdisciplinarity, internationalization and transfer of knowledge for society.

CICS.NOVA’s mission is to develop interdisciplinary research in social sciences, promoting critical thinking and the integration of knowledge within the communities it is part of, both nationally and internationally. CICS.NOVA structures its activities around an integrated strategy that encompasses key dimensions such as education and research, science dissemination and communication, co-creation and knowledge transfer, funding acquisition, publishing, and open access. This approach reinforces the unit’s mission to produce interdisciplinary knowledge with significant societal impact, aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
